Duties and Responsibilities

-Under general direction, this position is responsible for leading, planning, and directing data processes and technology in a fund-raising environment within the department of Advancement Services.

Duties and Responsibilities
-Manage and leverage the full capabilities of the current Ellucian Advance database and WebFOCUS/PowerBuilder reporting technologies with the objective of supporting and informing Advancement’s solicitations, programs, and operations. Optimize the use of Advancement’s technology suite and enhancing information access, analysis, and reporting capabilities to meet Advancement and University goals.

-Serve as the leader of the Advancement Information Systems (AIS) team. Train, mentor, and manage three direct reports on this team ? a Lead Programmer Analyst, a Programmer Analyst, and a Senior Web Analyst. Set performance objectives for each direct report, evaluate each team member on his/her progress toward these objectives, and partner with each team member to create a professional development plan for him/her.

-Act as a working manager, serving as both a leader and practitioner on a team that creates complex queries and custom reports from the database, performs hardware and software maintenance for Advancement, and routinely works on database-related projects.

-Oversee, develop, and ensure the integrity of Advancement’s suite of standard reports. Make certain that the reports accurately and consistently report key data about (but not limited to) fundraising performance, alumni engagement, and gift officer portfolios.

-Routinely run AIS’s existing suite of data audit reports, correcting data errors programmatically when possible (i.e. when a manual review is not needed).

-Serve as a key liaison to Loyola’s central Information Technology Services (ITS) division. Partner with members of ITS on activities including (but not limited to) co-leading database upgrades, enhancing the Advancement Data Warehouse, evaluating/implementing new technologies, and creating and documenting data imports to/exports from Advance.

-Serve the data needs of colleagues on the Loyola’s Maywood campus who work with data specific to the Stritch School of Medicine and the Niehoff School of Nursing.

-Partner on database-related projects with members of Advancement team at Loyola University Health System (LUHS) ? a separate entity with its own database ? but working in partnership with the University on select fundraising and data-oriented activities.

-Develop and implement annual and long-range plans for meeting the reporting, hardware, and software needs of Advancement.

-Stay abreast of new and evolving technologies in the advancement industry. Proactively use this knowledge to make recommendations to Advancement leadership about modifying existing technologies and/or adopting and implementing new technologies. Play a leadership role in the implementation and rollout of new technologies.

-Serve as a translator between the end users of Advancement technology and data (e.g. gift officers) and the AIS team members who make the technology and data available.

-Document new processes. Retroactively document existing process for which no documentation/incomplete documentation currently exists.

-Manage the report request queue and prioritize those requests with the guidance of the Senior Director of Advancement Services.

-Enable/modify Advancement team access to the Advance database, Advance Data Warehouse, WebFOCUS/PowerBuilder reports, and to other data resources ? providing for a self-service and ad hoc reporting environment.

-Perform other projects and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

Undergraduate degree in a relevant field, and/or related experience; 5-7 years of experience in an advancement, development or fundraising field with primary responsibilities that include gift processing and data management. Prior experience with Advance Donor Database is a plus.


Understanding of application development environments ? particularly those of data integration, systems administration, business process analysis, security architectures, and database schemas is desired. Experience in or equivalent knowledge of working in a fundraising environment is essential. An understanding of the advancement process and of advancement terminology is strongly preferable. Demonstrated superior collaborative skills among a variety of personalities is essential. Experience working in a Unix environment including shell scripting is desirable. Demonstrated experience as a self-directed visionary who can mold existing and new tools and pieces into a streamlined client-oriented program is desired. Accuracy and attention to detail in a deadline-driven environment are essential.



Computer Skills

Proficiency with Oracle, SAP InfoMaker, SQL, PL/SQL Developer, and WebFOCUS Business Intelligence Suite, Microsoft data analysis tools Power BI and PowerView, MS SQL Server data tools SSAS, SSIS, SSRS and/or related tools strongly preferred. Experience with Ellucian Advance, Advance Data Loader, SmartCall (or similar call center software), and/or iModules preferred, along with Visio or other flowcharting software. Proficiency required in information and database management. Proficiency with advanced MS Word processing, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Access. Proficiency with use of Internet, e-mail, and other office automation systems.
