Duties and Responsibilities

Loyola University Chicago invites applications from students currently enrolled in a library and information science graduate program to apply for a temporary, part-time reference and instruction assistant position for the 2017-2018 school year.

Position Summary:
• Working in either the Cudahy Library Reference Department or the Lewis Library Reference Department, the assistant will teach library instruction classes for undergraduate students, work at the Reference Desk, and contribute to the creation of research guides and tutorials
• Approximately 19 hours a week, with hours to be determined based on assigned duties and availability
• Position starts in late August/early September 2017 and runs through April 2018
• Reports to either the Reference Librarian for First and Second Year Programs or the Assistant Head of Lewis Library
• Based at either the Lake Shore Campus in Rogers Park or the Water Tower Campus in downtown Chicago
• Robust training in reference and instruction services will be provided

• Provide library instruction for first and second year students, including freshman writing courses and Arrupe College, based on learning outcomes and lesson plans developed by the Reference Department, approximately 4-8 classes a week
• Provide library instruction for other groups and programs, including English as a second language and student success programs
• Provide references services in person at the reference desk, and virtually via chat and email.
• Create and maintain research guides and tutorials
• Work on assessment projects as needed
• Some evening or weekend hours may be required

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

Currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited Library and Information Science graduate program.


Required Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited library and information science graduate program
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Drive
• Knowledge of library research tools and practices
• Ability to learn new software programs
• Ability to work independently

Desired Qualifications:
• Coursework in library reference and instruction
• Experience teaching library instruction classes


• Currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited library and information science graduate program

Computer Skills

Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Drive
